Broadband Availability: Location Matters!

Did you know that just one in four Americans have access to just one single internet service provider in their area? Most of them have no other option and must use that provider or go without internet service entirely. In some areas, it appears as though an ISP can serve your location, but doesn't reach your address. This can happen for many reasons, but shockingly it's often quite simply not profitable for the ISP to service your address, particularly for widely-spaced rural customers or "last mile" residences. As frustrating as it can be, sometimes the reason is that you're simply located on the wrong side of the street and can't get connected. The good news is that many providers are constantly expanding their networks, meaning more locations will become serviceable as time goes on.

Which Internet Service Type Is Best?

1. Fiber Internet. Fiber internet is usually the best option if it's available in your area. Fiber is capable of the fastest speeds of any other technology type, and typically features symmetrical (equal) upload and download speeds, a variety of speed tiers, and it doesn't slow down during peak usage hours unlike some other technologies. However, one drawback to fiber internet is that it's usually limited to densely populated areas, like cities or large municipalities, and may not yet be available in many rural or suburban areas.

2. Cable Internet. Wherever fiber internet isn't available yet, cable internet is the second-best option for speed, reliability, and price. Because cable internet uses cable TV lines to carry service to your home or business, there's a good chance it's already available where you need it. Cable lines have been used in urban, rural, and suburban areas for many years, and it is usually capable of faster upload and download speeds than wireless or DSL. One drawback to cable internet service is that it can become slow during peak traffic hours because it's a shared connection.

3. DSL Internet. If you can't get fiber or cable internet, DSL is hard to beat when it comes to reliability. DSL uses copper telephone wiring to transmit data, and it's commonly available in both rural and more densely populated areas. Standard DSL connection speeds vary by provider and distance from the central office.

4. Wireless Internet. Wherever you can't get DSL, cable, or fiber optic internet, wireless internet is probably your next best option. Wireless internet may require special equipment, but because the connection travels through the air, you don't need to be connected to wires or cables from the street or a telephone pole. Speeds with wireless internet can vary depending on your distance from the tower. However, there are some other drawbacks to wireless internet, such as the fact that your connection may be affected by weather like fog, heavy snow, or rain.

5. Satellite Internet. Satellite internet, while less than ideal for many purposes, has seen some improvement in speeds in recent years. Many satellite providers do offer surprisingly fast download speeds but the service itself is prone to many of the same problems as wireless internet, and the connections often come with relatively low data caps that many users easily surpass.

6. Dial-up Internet. Dial-up internet, surprisingly, is still available in the US and 265,331 households are using it to access the internet. With a connection speed of just 56 Kbps, it is by far the slowest internet technology type. In fact, it can take minutes to load even the most basic websites. We only recommend dial-up internet in locations where there are no other options available.

What Is the Fastest Internet Service In My Zip Code?

The fastest internet service in your zip code depends on what service types are available. Fiber internet, of course, is the fastest type of internet service with download speeds of up to 5,000 Mbps. Most fiber optic internet providers offer plans with a 1,000 Mbps maximum speed. Fiber internet service supports symmetrical upload and download speeds, which is a big plus for locations that have multiple devices and users sharing the connection at the same time.

Cable internet is the most common type of high-speed internet service in the US. Cable internet technology offers download speeds as fast as 1,000 Mbps, but it usually offers asymmetrical upload and download speeds. Cable internet service packages vary in actual speeds depending upon your cable provider and your location.

DSL, wireless internet, and satellite internet have varying technology types, but they all offer speeds of up to 100 Mbps. That's slower than cable internet or fiber internet, but is an improvement over much slower technologies.
