The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) says that Chanute’s plans to expand their existing fiber network would not duplicate the type of broadband service currently offered by AT&T, and they are recommending approval of Chanute’s plans to provide 1GB fiber Internet to its residents and local businesses.

According to reports, three members of the KCC will have the final say, but those staff recommendations tend to have a lot of influence on the outcome of such decisions.

Chanute Kansas is a small town with a population of about 9,000. Unlike many small Americans towns though, Chanute boasts an independent fiber broadband network that currently serves local government and civic buildings. They plan to expand that network to offer inexpensive gigabit fiber connections to every home and business in the area.

The Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing today on broadband Internet competition, media consolidation, and the future of online streaming video transmission. The witnesses who appeared before the committee were Comcast executive David L. Cohen and AT&T chief John T. Stankey.
